A statement delivered by Buckingham palace was then released upon his death and stated, “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty, The Queen, announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.” This is the first major death in the Royal Family since Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother passed away in 2002, and of course, before that, Princess Diana was killed in a car accident in 1997.
