The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating a deadly-officer involved shooting on Interstate 65 in South Nashville.
The shooting happened around 2 p.m. on I-65 near Harding Place. The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) says a trooper responded to a pedestrian on the interstate who was armed with a box cutter.
Metro Nashville Police spokesman Don Aaron says upon arrival, a THP trooper offered the subject a ride to safety and off the highway. The 37-year-old subject pushed away from the THP trooper and was observed to be armed with a box cutter. As more officers arrived and the standoff continued, the subject pulled a shiny object which looked to have a cylindrical shape from his pocket according to Aaron. Not knowing what the object was, officers fired in self-defense. The 37-year-old man was struck by the gunfire and he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
