NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Fulton County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed, along with one of her brothers, in an off-duty incident in Newton County, Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat confirms to Channel 2 Action News.
Labat said Deputy Shakeema Brown Jackson leaves behind a 17-month-old child.
Brown became a Deputy Sheriff just over a month ago.
The sheriff’s office said Jackson is being remembered as eager to learn, and always had a positive disposition. Coworkers said she was bubbly, and, no matter how disrespectful inmates may have been, always greeted them with “Good morning,” earning their respect.

Labat said the Newton County sheriff’s office is investigating.
“It’s a hard time for the sheriff’s office and we are asking for everyone’s prayers, continued prayers,” Labat said.
Labat said the Fulton County sheriff’s office is pulling together a team of peer counselors and offering employee assistance to the deputy’s coworkers.
Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown said preliminarily the incident may or may not be a domestic dispute. He said he sends his condolences to the victims’ family and to Labat and his staff members.
