Kim Jong-un became the supreme leader of North Korea in 2011 after the death of his father Kim Jong-il. Despite being an internationally known political figure very little is known about Kim Jong-un’s personal life and childhood, even by the citizens of North Korea. For instance, the North Korean government has never confirmed Kim Jong-un’s birthday although it’s believed he was born in the 1980’s and came into power during his mid to late 20’s. As a child, Kim Jong-un spent his early years in the capital city of Pyongyang with his mother and later he was sent to live with an aunt and uncle in Switzerland where he attended a private school. He lived a life of luxury, jet setting around Europe to visit Disneyland, Paris, and take skiing trips. His classmates at the International School of Berne, an English language school with a yearly tuition of over $20,000, had no idea he was part of North Korea’s Kim regime as he went by the name Pac Un. In fact some of his classmates thought he was strange because he always wore tracksuits instead of the typical jeans that most teens wore at the time. To Kim, jeans were a symbol of American capitalism and individualism. In 2001 he returned to North Korea to continue his education at Kim Il Sung Military University. Despite having no prior military experience Kim Jong-un quickly rose through the ranks of the military. He was made a four-star general, then a deputy chairman of the power-wielding Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party, and then a member of the policy-making Central Committee. This all led to Kim Jong-un being chosen as his father’s heir despite having an older brother and half brother. Kim Jong-un was seen as the stronger and more loyal brother and so he would become the leader of North Korea. Even nine years into his reign as North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong-un has not given up his lavish lifestyle. In fact, North Korea’s spending on luxury items has significantly increased since Kim Jong-un came into power despite them being banned. Interested in seeing what Kim Jong-Un spends his billions on?
